our celebrations

Celebrations are essential! At College Oak we enjoy several all-school events during the year as well as in-class festivities. Parents are invited to attend and may also volunteer to help with these fun events.

Family Pot Lucks
We begin and end our academic year with evening potlucks. We encourage families to bring their own reusable plates, utensils, napkins and cups along with food to share. These fun evenings are a great way to meet other families. Our end-of-the-year potluck is followed by a campout in the big grass yard - what's more fun than camping at school?

International Day of Peace
Each year in September, we join together with hundreds of other schools in making "pinwheels for peace". The children create pinwheels then place them in front of our school for a beautiful reminder that peace is essential and possible.

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
In October we make an all-school trip to a local pumpkin patch. The children not only choose a pumpkin, but make crafts, share snack and run through a simple corn maze.

All Species Day
In lieu of Halloween, we celebrate All Species Day. Children come to school in animal or plant costumes, participate in a parade and fun activities during morning session.

Holiday Sing-A-Long
Each December we gather as a school in the evening to sing traditional (and not-so-traditional) holiday songs. This fun event is a family favorite.

Earth Day
Our largest school-wide celebration is for Earth Day in April. Children design a special Earth Day t-shirt and each child receives one. Children and their families are invited to attend the morning-long festivities which include games, crafts, special guests and, often, live music.

Birthday Celebration
Birthday celebrations are a Montessori tradition. During this special ceremony, the birthday child holds a globe, representing the Earth, and walks around a candle, representing the sun. Each trip around the "sun" represents one year the child has been on the planet. Parents may share photos of their child's life, one for each year. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the birthday child may share a wholesome snack with the class. Each teacher will provide more details about this heartwarming celebration.
